Who Needs Comprehensive Eye Exams?

Everyone needs comprehensive eye exams! Beyond getting a prescription to correct vision, a comprehensive eye exam also inspects overall eye health. If you require vision correction, the eye doctor will likely recommend you visit more often to ensure your prescription keeps up with vision changes. If you don’t need vision correction, regular eye exams are still a good idea to ensure overall eye health. Age also determines how often you should receive comprehensive eye exams.

Children
Ages 3-5

Comprehensive eye exams for preschool children are critical to ensure early eye health. Lazy eyes, misaligned vision, etc., need to be diagnosed and treated early for a full recovery and healthy development.

Schoolchildren
& Teens

Once a child begins school, they should receive regular eye exams annually. Left untreated, undiagnosed eye conditions or vision problems can negatively impact educational and physical development.

Adults

Regular eye exams throughout adulthood are important, and not just for vision correction. Eye exams help detect problems early (when they’re most treatable) and provide clues to overall health. Adults with vision correction need annual exams. Adults without vision issues should still get a comprehensive eye exam every two years.

General Eye Exams for Comprehensive Eye Health

Even if you have great vision with no prior need for glasses or contacts, regular eye exams are still recommended. It’s crucial to check overall eye health for various reasons, including if you’re 40 years or older, if you take medication that has side effects that impact eyes/vision, or if you have diabetes or a family history of eye disease or vision loss. Dobbs Eye Clinic performs general eye exams to review eye health and proactively address any issues. Depending on what the doctor finds during the eye exam, he will recommend if you need any additional testing and when follow-up eye care should be scheduled.
